Grand Hotel

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Book

Built in 1887 as America's Summer Place, this National Historic Landmark stands on car-free Mackinac Island with the world's longest porch—a 660-foot covered veranda nicknamed "Flirtation Walk" overlooking the Straits of Mackinac.

Carleton Varney of Dorothy Draper & Company transformed the five-story Queen Anne-inspired hotel into an explosion of bold colors and patterns where bright florals, oversized geraniums, black-and-white checkerboard tiles, and intricate woodwork meet late 19th-century decor with all 397 individually decorated rooms different from each other.
